No Firehouse Tango Thursday, July 4

Okay, Okay, we get it!  Independence Day is a day for fireworks and family.  Only a few folks wanted tango.  No tango in Maywood on Thursday, July 4th.  We will see you on June 17 and July 11th.

Someone, I can't remember who, asked about July 4th and was thrilled that we were going to be there.  If you are that person, please don't come and then be mad at me.

We had lots of responses, but Steve Turi's e mail, below, sums it all up.

You know there's nowhere else I'd rather be than Firehouse.
I do think though, that most of Firehouse may well be elsewhere.
I'd be inclined to cancel for the holiday.
Torn and sad,
Esteban

New!!!  Sunday, June 23, 2013 Lunch and afternoon Milonga in the Catskills (Honors Haven)

NEW!!!!
THIS SUNDAY AFTERNOON ~ JUNE 23rd, 2013 Lunch and After-Lunch-Milonga
(Honor's Haven Resort & Spa, Ellenville, New York http://www.stardustdance.com for more information and directions. The hotel is located off Route 209 and is right next door to the Nevele)

  • Lunch is from 1p-2p... includes very nice gourmet 3 course menu, lovely room, white tablecloth ten tops mostly.  There is a cash bar.
  • Michelle and Bob Friedman will DJ the lunch hour with all styles-  a little tango ( they do play Di Sarli for the AT fans), mostly Latin- salsa, cha cha, meringue, Rumba,West and east coast swing, foxtrot, waltz, even two step sometimes. It's fun.
  • The milonguita is listed as 2:30-4:30, but Ilene (great DJ) will be ready to play at 2pm.
  • The lunch is $35 per person ( basically what it costs Stardust to cover the meal) an d that $35 would include the milonguita as well. For those who might not be able to make lunch but still want to come, the milonguita is no charge.
  • The room is the Zephyr Lounge, just down one flight of stairs from the ballroom where lunch happens.   It's a good size for us... not too big, so the energy stays up.
  • Ilene needs the names of the people who want to come in advance as she has to give them to the gate keeper, otherwise they can't get on the property ( technically) so you can just email names, the sooner the better (It's best to contact her by Saturday evening or e mail by 10 am Sunday at the latest), to imhmedia@yahoo.com or call Sue's cell phone at 201-826-6602 or Ilene Marder can be reached at 845 399-9034 for  information.
  • As far as I understand it, everyone will pay at the front desk- and get a wrist band for lunch. Can pay cash, check or credit card.
  • People should  get there a little before 1pm- there is a nice large lobby where they can hang out... some people like to come really early as there is also a shoe dealer and other tanguero type items including jewelery, shoe bags, etc being sold.  But they will be packing up after lunch...so if anyone is interested in buying shoes ( lots of low heeled ladies shoes and really comfy dance sneakers, they could come at  noon.

Firehouse celebrations

Next Thursday June 27th - Anniversary of Jean and Ed Mancision-Botteri

Jean and Ed have been with us since the Paramus Firehouse # 4 days.  We are thrilled, ten years later, to be celebrating their anniversary at Firehouse Tango.

If heaven is anything like celebrating one's birthday at Firehouse Tango, it has a lot to recommend it. Frankly, I'd rather be at Firehouse. Thank you lovely tangueras, for a birthday memory I shall cherish. Con mucho amore,

Steve Turi

I keep saying I do not want to celebrate any more birthdays, but how many men will line up to dance with me, if not for the traditional tributes on birthdays.....oh well, you know that is not really true because our tanqueros dance with all of the ladies...

Line of dance and Tango Etiquette

Line of Dance and Tango Etiquette

Because of its immense importance, the information below has appeared in this newsletter many times and is available in print at our front desk. No matter what your level or what you see other folks doing, please take the time to learn the "rules of the road" and put them into action.

A Word from Fran Chesleigh

I'd like to take this opportunity to talk about one of my favorite subjects - line of dance. This is a very important concept, especially since we have such a large number of people coming to our milonga each week. Line of dance - sometimes called line of direction -- is an invisible oval or circle that defines the lane of travel counterclockwise around the dance space.

When we dance, as good dancers we try as much as possible to move along this line, passing either inside or outside, when appropriate, and moving toward the center of the floor, when we need to stop or pause during our trip. Good floor craft - or dance etiquette - means dancing not only with our current partner, but with everyone in the room, making sure not to disturb their individual space as we negotiate the floor. On a crowded floor, this can sometimes be pretty difficult, but it's a crucial component of our social interaction with others on the dance floor.

Everyone who takes our lessons before our milonga has been reminded again and again that moving along the line of dance is part of what makes it possible for a large group such as we entertain each week to have fun without worrying about people suddenly coming out of nowhere and bumping into them. Let's all of us try really hard to maintain the line of dance during every trip around the floor. If you find that there are people who consistently flout this important convention, please let me or Sue know about it, and we'll do our best to make sure it doesn't continue. We all love to dance; that's one of the reasons we come to the Firehouse every Thursday. Let's make sure it's fun for everyone.

Continuing about the line of dance
Please guys, follow the line of dance.  It makes it so much more pleasant for everyone.  Here is an interesting web site that you can go to for more information about the line of dance and dance floor etiquette (used with permission of owner).

Also Please:
o               If you drink wine, please bring a bottle every so often.  We do not provide wine; you enjoy it thanks to the generosity of your fellow milongueros.
o               Try not to walk across the dance floor when folks are dancing; walk along the outside to get to the tables and chairs.
o               Confine food or drink to the bar room and the tables in the ballroom. Do not bring them into the dance area.
o               Do not touch the air conditioning and heating controls. Instead, bring problems to the attention of one of the organizers.
o               Put your handbags and shoe bags under the chairs or tables, not on top of them.
o               Throw your dishes and cups in the garbage can when you are finished with them.

Tango Tip of the week
Hello everyone, Pat here with your Tango Tip of the Week. For the past three weeks, Fran has been putting together some Tool Kits for leaders to help them focus when they get up to dance, when they take dance position, and when they lead their first steps. I am now going to provide similar Tool Kits for followers. It is our hope that by providing a specific list of preparatory ideas, we can help both leaders and followers prepare themselves to start their dance in an appropriate manner.

Followers, imagine for a moment that you are at a Milonga, sitting at a table on the edge of the dance floor. You are hoping that someone will come up and ask you to dance. When this happens, and you get up and assume the dance position, what do you do and what are your thoughts?

If you have danced with this person before, and you know exactly what he's going to lead and how he will treat you - do you just go into autopilot and move around the floor hardly thinking what's happening? On the other hand, if you have not danced with the person before, are you nervous and do you drape yourself around him so he can do whatever he wants and just carry you around the floor?

Neither of these scenarios has anything to do with what your actions should be when someone asks you to dance. Instead, here are five things for a follower to think about as she gets up to dance:

1. Posture:

I am going to stand straight up with my weight on both feet, keeping my shoulders back and down and my chin in.

2. Following the lead:

I will resolve to follow my leader to the best of my ability. I will wait for each lead and will not anticipate what he's going to do next.

3. Balance:

At the end of each step I will come onto my own balance and bring my feet together.

4. No leaning!

I will maintain my own upright balance throughout the dance, and will not lean, cling or drape myself around my leader.

5. When things go wrong ...

I will not immediately think it's my fault. I will try to help rectify the situation and hope that my leader feels the same way.

This 5-point Followers Tool Kit #1 should help any follower feel more confident as she gets up to dance. If used on a regular basis, you will find that your following becomes more accurate and the dance more enjoyable for both yourself and your leader.

Next week, I'll talk about the Followers Took Kit #2: Forming the embrace.

Saturdays with Fran and Pat at Dance Manhattan
For Firehouse dancers who might enjoy a day in the Big Apple on Saturdays, Fran teaches from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. every week. He offers a beginner class in Milonga & Argentine Waltz at 11:00 a.m. as well as an intermediate class in Tango at noon. From 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Fran and Pat host a special beginner/intermediate practice for bringing your skills up to speed. The cost for the practice is $10 per person. (Bringing a partner isn't necessary.) Fran and Pat are always on hand to answer any questions you may have about your dancing, and to help you with figures you're working on. If you want to take Fran's classes, call Dance Manhattan at 212-807-0802 to register. For the practice, all you have to do is arrive with $10 and your dance shoes in hand.

See you every Saturday for a full day of Tango!
Firehouse Tango hot line - We rarely cancel
We want to remind everyone that if the weather looks really bad, we will leave messages on our web site www.firehousetango.com and phone 201-825-1570. You can also reach us on our cell phone 201-826-6602 (Sue) and 201-913-8504 (Joe). Feel free to leave a message on any of these lines. We cancel only when absolutely necessary (only about six seven times in all these years), but please check whenever you're not sure. If there isn't any message, we're on.

During Hurricane Sandy, when we had only cell phone service, I was able to leave a message on my cell, so I guess that the best number to call is 201-826-6602.
Lost and Found
If you lost something, we probably have it. We have a few ladies' scarves and some shoes. There are also various items of clothing and jewelry in the closet. Ask Tibor at the front desk.
