Firehouse celebrations in April
|
Next Thursday April 11 - Sue Dallon I hope every one of my Firehouse friends will join me for my birthday next Thursday. I can't imagine celebrating the occasion without dancing, socializing, and sharing the best years of my life with the folks nearest and dearest to my heart.
I sincerely hope that all of you Firehouse tangueros will line up to dance a birthday tango with me. As I get older, I need the ego boost more and more, so please don't disappoint me.
Thursday, April 18 - Eva Roth and Mona Phillips We miss them both and welcome them back to FirehouseEva - Birthday milonga Eva Roth, our dear milonguera from Buenos Aires who took Firehouse by storm a few years ago and cooks something different for us almost every Thursday, celebrates her birthday with us on Thursday, April 18. At Eva's request, instead of a birthday tango, she will have a birthday milonga. Get ready to welcome this wonderful tanguera back from her extended stay in Buenos Aires. Mona - Birthday tango
Because of her intensive work schedule, Mona has been away for a while. We miss her and she misses us. She has said that she can't think of a better way of getting older than with tango at Firehouse. I couldn't agree more. Kevin will start the dance and then all the tangueros can cut in. Thursday, April 25 - Francis Gregoire
Francis and Marie Gregoire have been coming to Firehouse for many years and have been to Buenos Aires with us twice, and we are honored to be able to celebrate Francis' birthday on April 25th. He will start the birthday tango with Marie and then we lucky ladies can begin cutting in. Oh, and I always look forward to the mountain of huge and luscious shrimp and delicious chocolate cake that Francis and Marie bring.
If heaven is anything like celebrating one's birthday at Firehouse Tango, it has a lot to recommend it. Frankly, I'd rather be at Firehouse. Thank you lovely tangueras, for a birthday memory I shall cherish. Con mucho amore,
Steve Turi
I keep saying I do not want to celebrate any more birthdays, but how many men will line up to dance with me, if not for the traditional tributes on birthdays.....oh well, you know that is not really true because our tanqueros dance with all of the ladies...

Jorge Nel and Milena a big hit at Firehouse

A fabulous evening at FirehouseJorge Nel's surprise visit to Firehouse Tango contributed to a delightful evening. Firehouse folks scooped up Mr. Tango shoes at bargain prices and later were treated to a fabulous milonga and vals performance by Jorge Nel and Milena. To put the evening over the top, Carolina Jaurena and Andres Bravo, one of our favorite tango couples, stopped by to say hello. My Resolutions for 2013 - I blew it big time
|
Sue's resolutions for 2013 - Update
Here were my resolutions for 2013 1. Keep improving my español and study Spanish every day 2. Keep visiting Buenos Aires 3. Shorten this newsletter (HaHa) 4. Exercise every day when I'm at home and try to continue when I'm on the road My Resolutions - How they are going?
February - a good report
With all the excitement of getting ready for our trip to Buenos Aires, I forgot to include last month's update on my resolutions. I kept them all, even when I was on the road.
March - Exercise - What's that?
Then came March and our extended trip. I packed my bands along with my good intentions so that I could I continue exercising every day in Argentina. I did Friday morning before we left, then flew all night and hurried to a milonga as soon as we got there. Needless to say, I missed Saturday. A feeble try on Sunday was followed by nothing -- the bands sat on the table unused. I even skipped a few days at home. I am back on schedule, and I'll let you know next month how that's coming.
March - Buenos Aires and Espanol - yes!
On the other hand, I spoke Spanish every single day and studied diligently. I've convinced myself that this makes up for the lack of exercise. Buenos Aires is as wonderful as ever, and we might even go again this year.
March - Newsletter by Fran
The newsletter was shorter, but no thanks to me. Fran Chesleigh, unlike me, knows how to say everything important in many fewer words.
Monica Paz to visit New Jersey - May, 2013
|
Great News! Great news! Monica Paz, our dear friend and teacher from Buenos Aires will be in New Jersey from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27. Luckily, (admittedly with a bit of manipulation on our part) she will be able to join us for Firehouse Tango's tenth anniversary celebration that Thursday. About Monica
Monica Paz was born and raised in Buenos Aires, and tango has been her full time profession for almost 20 years. She specializes in Tango Milonguero style (with its strong chest-to-chest connection) which she loves to dance with the best of the old milongueros in the best of the milongas of Buenos Aires.
Last year, Monica realized her dream of opening her own studio in Buenos Aires (at 30 Riobamba near the Congresso.) Two of the best of the wonderful milongueros, Nestor La Vitola and Osvaldo Natucci, teach group lessons on Tuesday and Thursday nights, with Monica translating when necessary. Monica, La Vitola and Natucci also teach private lessons. If you are in Buenos Aires, I highly recommend checking out these lessons. Monica has taught extensively all over the United States and Europe, as well as in Australia and much of South America. Monica's web site and Interviews of old Milongueros
Monica is passionate about preserving the traditions, codes, and history of tango. To this end, she continues pursuing her project of interviewing the precious few remaining old milongueros of Buenos Aires. Their stories and the videos accompanying them, as well as other wonderful videos of Monica can be found on her web site at www.mptango.com Scroll down for English or Spanish selection. My favorite video of Monica and Nestor dancing to Poema
This is the video that made us fall in love with Monica. it's my favorite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWRBZ-Uku68&list=UU5UKKJeGowH6cGdYatKcKkw&index=10
And now for the best news! Lessons with Monica are available in New JerseyMonica will be available for private lessons in Maywood or Ramsey from Thursday, May 23rd through Monday, May 27. You can e mail me at firehousetango@gmail.com or call me at 201-826-6602 for information. I recommend that you take advantage of this terrific opportunity.
40 CD package from Buenos Aires
|
Osvaldo Natucci, one of the finest and most well known DJ's in Buenos Aires, has compiled a magnificent 40 CD package of tango selections. The set contains 1000 of the best tangos of the Golden Age: the ones played in the milongas of Buenos Aires. I brought two sets home with me.
If you are interested in purchasing these CD's, send an e mail to firehousetango@gmail.com or call me at 201-826-6602.

i everybody, Fran here with your Tango Tip of the Week. Many years ago - let's say, during the 1940's in the U.S.A.tances would show you a few |
Hi everybody, Fran here with your Tango Tip of the Week. If you've a leader who's been learning to dance Argentine Tango by studying with a knowledgeable teacher, you know by now that Tango is not taught as a series of memorized figures - the way that most other Ballroom, Latin and Swing dances are currently presented. Instead, we teach you how to lead and follow fundamental movements - forward, backward, sideward and in-place weight changes along with pauses - and then help you in the process of creating your own dance by improvising your way through various combinations of these core steps. In theory, this pedagogical approach eliminates the problem of limiting your personal
creativity - as is invariably the case with a system which involves pre-ordained, teacher-derived figures. Put in another way, if the teacher shows you a figure and says, "here's the basic step," your virtually automatic response will be to stop thinking, memorize the figure, and ask what's next. If, on the other hand, the teacher shows you five rudimentary elements, and challenges you to make up your own figures, the stage has been set for maximum creativity. Get the idea? The problem is this. The moment you put together two or three fundamental movements to create a figure, a habit is born. Every time you piece together a few movements that feel comfortable, a big part of you will say, "oh, boy, let's do this one again ... and again ... and again."
Habit. Is there anything monumentally wrong with forming habits? Aren't you personalizing your dance making it your own? Well, yes, in a way, but at the same time you're also producing your own limitations, and all your partners can guess what you're going to do before you do it. Yikes! So what's the antidote to habit formation? I'm glad you asked. It's quite simple ... but not easy. You can approach the potential problem from two sides: 1. What figure have I just completed 2.
What figure am I planning to lead Let's say you've just finished a sequence that worked reasonably well between you and your partner, and you're now momentarily at rest. Ask yourself, "Have I ever done that figure before?" "Do I do that figure over and over?" If the answer to either of those questions is, "yes," try to figure out a way to alter the sequence the next time you do it. If you can't come up with a way to change it in some workable way, try to leave it out of your repertoire for the rest of that dance ... or maybe even for the rest of the evening. Do this even if you really like that particular sequence. Don't worry. You can bring it back soon - (but not too often).
Now, let's talk about sequences you haven't done in this dance, but are planning to throw in. Ask yourself the same questions. "Have I ever done this sequence before?" "Do I like to repeat this sequence over and over?" Are you nodding, "yes?" Take it out of the program. Save it for your next partner. Or maybe for the next evening. By starting to pay more attention to what you're doing on the dance floor, and therefore by minimizing habitual actions, you'll be opening the door to creative possibilities that might not otherwise have presented themselves to you. At the same time, you'll be making yourself a less predictable, more exciting partner to dance with. Give it a try.
Saturdays with Fran and Pat at Dance Manhattan |
For Firehouse dancers who might enjoy a day in the Big Apple on Saturdays, Fran teaches from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. every week. He offers a beginner class in Milonga & Argentine Waltz at 11:00 a.m. as well as an intermediate class in Tango at noon. From 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Fran and Pat host a special beginner/intermediate practice for bringing your skills up to speed. The cost for the practice is $10 per person. (Bringing a partner isn't necessary.) Fran and Pat are always on hand to answer any questions you may have about your dancing, and to help you with figures you're working on. If you want to take Fran's classes, call Dance Manhattan at 212-807-0802 to register. For the practice, all you have to do is arrive with $10 and your dance shoes in hand.
See you every Saturday for a full day of Tango!
Firehouse Tango hot line - We rarely cancel |
We want to remind everyone that if the weather looks really bad, we will leave messages on our web site www.firehousetango.com and phone 201-825-1570. You can also reach us on our cell phone 201-826-6602 (Sue) and 201-913-8504 (Joe). Feel free to leave a message on any of these lines. We cancel only when absolutely necessary (only about six seven times in all these years), but please check whenever you're not sure. If there isn't any message, we're on.
During Hurricane Sandy, when we had only cell phone service, I was able to leave a message on my cell, so I guess that the best number to call is 201-826-6602. If you lost something, we probably have it. We have a few ladies' scarves and some shoes. There are also various items of clothing and jewelry in the closet. Ask Tibor at the front desk. The following folks helped set up, break down and clean up before and after the milonga. Without them, there would be no Firehouse Tango. - Terri Lopez
