Live Music with Octavio Brunetti and Machiko Ozawa and Shoe sale and performance with Carolina Jaurena and Andres Bravo - Thursday, June 6
Mr. Tango Shoe Sale and performance by Carolina Jaurena and Andres Bravo
Carolina, once again, will come to Firehouse with Mr. Tango shoes. As I've said many times before, these are my absolute favorites for both comfort and looks. I've given away my entire collection of Buenos Aires shoes and ordered the ones from Mr. Tango in every color imaginable.
The Music
After hearing tons of recommendations, I finally went to see Octavio Brunetti, and he blew me away. I haven't seen Machiko Ozawa on violin, but I've heard from many sources that she is amazing.

June 13 - Birthday of Marie Gregoire
Francis and Marie Gregoire have been coming to Firehouse for many years and have been to Buenos Aires with us twice, and we are honored to be able to celebrate Marie's birthday on June 13th. Francis will start the birthday tango with Marie and then the lucky guys can begin cutting in. Marie is a terrific dancer, and it is sure to be delightful. Oh, and the mountain of huge and luscious shrimp and delicious chocolate cake that Francis and Marie always bring will certainly be delicious, as always.
June 27 - Anniversary of Jean Mancision and Ed Botteri
Jean and Ed were among the first tangueros at Paramus Firehouse # 4 in 2003. We have had many celebrations with them, and they were with us on our first trip to Buneos Aires. We hope to see much more of them.
If heaven is anything like celebrating one's birthday at Firehouse Tango, it has a lot to recommend it. Frankly, I'd rather be at Firehouse. Thank you lovely tangueras, for a birthday memory I shall cherish. Con mucho amore,
Steve Turi
I keep saying I do not want to celebrate any more birthdays, but how many men will line up to dance with me, if not for the traditional tributes on birthdays.....oh well, you know that is not really true because our tanqueros dance with all of the ladies...

Recipe - Sweet Potato Souffle
|
Here is the recipe for last week's sweet potato souffle. I am thrilled that so many people liked it enough to ask.
SUE'S SWEET POTATO SOUFFLE Serving Size: 6
I boil the sweet potatoes in a big pot until they are very soft. After they cool, the skin comes off very easily. After removing the skin, I mash the potatoes, add the other ingredients and beat well. It would probably be easier but I don't think it would be as good to use canned sweet potatoes. I've always made them fresh.
½ Cup White Sugar (or less to taste) 1 Egg ¼ Cup Melted Butter (I use sweet unsalted butter) 1 Tsp. Vanilla 1/3 Cup Evaporated Milk
1 ½ Cups Mashed Sweet Potatoes (About 5 potatoes - I don't measure - proportions aren't that important)
Beat all ingredients together. Mix and pour into greased casserole dish.
TOPPING
½ Cup Brown Sugar ¼ Cup White Flour ¼ Cup Pecans 2 ½ Tablespoons Melted Butter
Mix and crumble on top of the sweet potato mix
Bake soufflé 35 - 40 minutes at 350 degrees. I usually bake it longer until the top looks a little dry.

Firehouse Tango Anniversary Congratulations - And thanks to all who called and texted
From Gretchen Janssen (In Oregon)
Congratulations to Firehouse on its 10th anniversary!! I remember the first day I walked into the fire house building (a real fire house!) I knew no one except Walter from whom I had taken my first lessons in tango. You made a first announcement of a trip to Buenos Aires and I signed up. It was the beginning of many happy experiences of dancing. It was also the beginning of numerous trips to Argentina - 13 to date, including my leading a great trip. It also especially initiated a process of new self awareness and learning about myself emotionally and interpersonally through the experiences. It has been deeply meaningful. Thank you! Gretchen Janssen I will be thinking of you on Thursday and sending best wishes from Oregon.
From Elena S. (She ended up coming - couldn't bear to stay away) Dear Joe, Sue and Terry
Unfortunately I shall not be able to come this evening due to work obligations and I would like to wish you and all my fellow tangueros a great evening as befits and a splendid anniversary! I shall miss it all -- the great food, the music, the dance.... but I send you all my love and lots of hugs too Elena
From Norma A. Dear Sue & Joe, I am so sorry I missed the tenth anniversary of my favorite place in the world -- The Firehouse Tango -- I didn't brave the storm - and had to listen to the pounding rain almost all night, wondering how it went. Your newsletter proved that there is a new generation of tangueros and familiar tangueros braver than I who prove what the Firehouse means to us. You are my tango "beginning" and my tango "family" and my tango "home" --- thanks to the love that you offer directly non-stop from your heart.
Next week (May 31) I will wear the dress I planned to wear last night and celebrate my very own tenth anniversary with you! Love you very much ... Norma
From Sue's daughter, Jeanette Congrats Mom!!!!
From Ann and Willy F. Congratulations Sue and Monique....so worry Willy and I couldn't be there!!!
All our best! Ann and Willy
From Veronica So disappointed i couldnt make it last night! I was ready for my "prom" dress. Main St was a disaster in Nyack and so was my basement and the nee sod we put down the day before...it was being washed away down the driveway. Couldnt bail on the situation (no pun intended). Anyway, glad to hear it turned out great!
Veronica
From Brigitte and Sandor S.
I am glad to hear everything went well last night. Sandor and I were on our way, but had to turn around. Were so stuck in traffic that we judged it impossible to reach you in a reasonable time.
Hugs, Brigitte Szarka
From Jeanne and Ed Hi Sue, I just wanted to let you know that we won't be going to our Firehouse celebration. I am not feeling too well and just need to stay home. I know you will have a great time and I will be there dancing with you all in spirit! Fondly, Jeanne
From Ingrid and Karl J. Dear Sue and Joe,
Congratulations on 10 wonderful years of Firehouse Tango. The celebration must be in full swing...regretfully I was not able to join you in the festivities.
Karl, who is in presently in Germany, and I wish you continued success.
Be well and all the best,
Ingrid
Hi everybody, Fran here with your Tango Tip of the Week. Before most of us start the actual process of learning how to dance, we probably conjure up a vision of getting out on a dance floor and moving around gracefully to music - and having a great time with our friend or loved one without any particular effort. In the abstract, dancing seems like a kind of harmless activity in which we can forget all about our worries and cares, and just have some fun.
Then, of course, we give it a try, and find out that what we assumed was going to be easy is, in fact, a high-precision skill which demands literally years of patient development in order to get us anywhere. At that point, we either decide to change course and take up something less demanding, or bite the bullet and continue. Let's say you're a male dancer who has made the decision to give Tango your best shot. You're currently taking regular lessons of some kind (preferably privates, but I won't quibble), and you practice your dancing at least twice each week. If you're like I was when I was at that stage of development, you get out on the dance floor with a partner, take her in your arms, and your plan (if you have one at all) is to sort of passively see what happens. Sometimes, things work, sometimes they don't. Okay, I'd better take more lessons.
Right now, I'm going to offer you an alternative plan for when you get up to dance. Let's call it a pre-Tango "tool kit" which you're going to mentally carry with you every time you head for the dance floor. Today, we're going to talk about things you're going to make sure you have in hand before you actually take you partner in the embrace. (Next week, we'll make a checklist for forming the embrace in preparation for movement, and the following week we'll build a tool kit for actually conducting the dance itself. All right, you're walking out to the floor with your partner. Maybe it's someone you've never danced with before, maybe it's a long-time partner. Right now, that doesn't matter. The following is what you're going to think about: 1.
I'm going to adjust my posture so that I'm standing up straight with my chest up, my shoulders down and out, and my head over my spine. 2. I'm going to remember precisely how to comfortably lead all fundamental movements, include pauses, in-place changes of weight, side forward and back steps, and pivots. 3. I'm going to make it a general rule to maintain solid, upright balance between steps, and to always bring my legs and feet together before making my next movement.
4. I'm never going to lean on my partner in any way during the dance. 5. If and when things go wrong during the dance, I'm going to take responsibility for them, and continually try to make things better for my partner - without blaming her. 6. I'm going to try to have fun!
Okay, there's your leader's pre-Tango "tool kit." By now, my hope is that you've addressed each one of these elements in your lessons, and that you understand what they mean. If not, consult with your teacher to bring your tool kit up to speed. This will give you a very solid foundation from which to begin the process of dancing with any partner. Next week, we'll talk about the embrace.
Saturdays with Fran and Pat at Dance Manhattan |
For Firehouse dancers who might enjoy a day in the Big Apple on Saturdays, Fran teaches from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. every week. He offers a beginner class in Milonga & Argentine Waltz at 11:00 a.m. as well as an intermediate class in Tango at noon. From 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Fran and Pat host a special beginner/intermediate practice for bringing your skills up to speed. The cost for the practice is $10 per person. (Bringing a partner isn't necessary.) Fran and Pat are always on hand to answer any questions you may have about your dancing, and to help you with figures you're working on. If you want to take Fran's classes, call Dance Manhattan at 212-807-0802 to register. For the practice, all you have to do is arrive with $10 and your dance shoes in hand.
See you every Saturday for a full day of Tango!
Firehouse Tango hot line - We rarely cancel |
We want to remind everyone that if the weather looks really bad, we will leave messages on our web site www.firehousetango.com and phone 201-825-1570. You can also reach us on our cell phone 201-826-6602 (Sue) and 201-913-8504 (Joe). Feel free to leave a message on any of these lines. We cancel only when absolutely necessary (only about six seven times in all these years), but please check whenever you're not sure. If there isn't any message, we're on.
During Hurricane Sandy, when we had only cell phone service, I was able to leave a message on my cell, so I guess that the best number to call is 201-826-6602. If you lost something, we probably have it. We have a few ladies' scarves and some shoes. There are also various items of clothing and jewelry in the closet. Ask Tibor at the front desk.
