Next Thursday June 13 - Birthday of Marie Gregoire
Francis and Marie Gregoire have been coming to Firehouse for many years and have been to Buenos Aires with us twice, and we are honored to be able to celebrate Marie's birthday on June 13th. Francis will start the birthday tango with Marie and then the lucky guys can begin cutting in. Marie is a terrific dancer, and it is sure to be delightful. Oh, and the mountain of huge and luscious shrimp and mouth-watering chocolate cake that Francis and Marie always bring will surely be delicious, as always.
Thursday, May 30 - Belated Birthday of Gay Fallows
I received this note from Walter Monteblanco on May 31st:
"Sue: Did we celebrate A B'day last night?"
I have been suitably chastised for leaving our lovely birthday celebration for Gay Fallows Monteblanco out of last week's newsletter.
And an awesome celebration it was. Walter started the birthday dance, then Peter cut in, followed by a long line of Firehouse tangueros. There were so many who wanted to dance with her that I had to play two selections, Gallo Ciego and Malena, both by Color Tango:. At the end, Walter cut in once again. Gay, of course, followed every partner flawlessly.
The luscious cake, brought by Walter, was filled with peaches and topped with whipped cream and crunchy meringue. My mouth waters just thinking about it.
As most of you know, Walter and Gay (first separately and then as a couple) have been dear Firehouse friends for years. We have to catch them for celebrations in between extensive world travels. We are thrilled to have them whenever we can.
OK Walter. Am I forgiven for omitting this important occasion?
If heaven is anything like celebrating one's birthday at Firehouse Tango, it has a lot to recommend it. Frankly, I'd rather be at Firehouse. Thank you lovely tangueras, for a birthday memory I shall cherish. Con mucho amore,
Steve Turi
I keep saying I do not want to celebrate any more birthdays, but how many men will line up to dance with me, if not for the traditional tributes on birthdays.....oh well, you know that is not really true because our tanqueros dance with all of the ladies...
Terri Lopez
Octavio Brunetti and Machiko Ozawa provided a great evening of music and entertainment at Firehouse.
Many thanks to Marta Bautis for arranging the music and bringing the musicians and to Angeles Chanaha for taking them home. We couldn't have done it without them.
My Resolutions through May
|
Sue's resolutions for 2013 - Update Here were my resolutions for 2013 1. Keep improving my español and study Spanish every day 2. Keep visiting Buenos Aires 3. Shorten this newsletter (HaHa) 4. Exercise every day when I'm at home and try to continue when I'm on the road
My Resolutions - How they are going?
May - a little slip
Every month I update my readers on the progress of my New Year's resolutions. I was great this year until my Buenos Aires vacation, where I blew it big time. The good news is that I'm sort of back on schedule.
Exercise - Good
When I was at home, I exercised every day. Away, it's much harder, and I skipped three days in California. I'll try harder next time (Don't hold your breath)
Espanol - yes! happy with my progress.
May - Newsletter by Sue
As anyone who knows me realizes, brevity is not my strong suit. I do try, but there's always so much to say.

Live Music
From Steve Turi
\ Hi Sue, Live music: I can hardly wait 'til Thursday! I've heard Octavio and Machiko perform. They are extraordinarily talented musicians and entertainers. Anyone who listens will not be disappointed. It will be a memorable evening at Firehouse. Eagerly looking forward, Steve
Hi everybody, Fran here with your Tango Tip of the Week. Last week, we talked about developing a kind of practical "tool kit" for leaders - a very powerful group of ideas that you start thinking about as you walk out onto the dance floor. This "tool kit" will enable you to focus your mind on exactly what you're going to be doing on your own and with your partner both before and during the actual dance. If you'd like to read about why I
think it's a good idea to do this, take a look at last week's Firehouse Tango Tip . You'll find it in the archives on our Web site. Have you re-read the elements of your leader's pre-Tango tool kit? I'm not going to repeat them here, so if you haven't committed them to memory, now's a good time to do so. Ready to continue? Good. Today, we're going to discuss forming the embrace from the leader's standpoint. For the time being, we're going to assume that our partner understands her role -- but in a few weeks, Pat will more thoroughly discuss how the follower forms her half of the embrace. Leaders, when creating the embrace with your partner, here is your "embrace tool kit": 1.
Stand in front of your partner so that you are exactly facing one another, center to center. 2. Check your posture to make sure you're standing up straight. 3. Make certain your legs and feet are together, and that you're maintaining solid, upright balance. 4.
Place your right arm gently around her waist and connect it to the center of her back without in any way pulling her towards you. Remember, both partners remain in balance independently. (This may mean that you have to shuffle a little closer to her so that you're not tilted uncomfortably forward.) 5. Take your partner's right hand in your own left hand, palm to palm. Try to have your hand at the level of your nose. If she's considerably shorter than you, compromise by having your hand between your nose and hers. Never push or pull with your left hand or arm. 6.
Don't allow the elbows of either arm to be elevated unnaturally. 7. Shift your weight slightly forward onto the front part of your feet. This means that your weight centers in the balls of the feet while still remaining in the front part of your heels. Don't lean on your partner. Okay, there's your leader's "embrace tool kit." You're ready to make your first move. If you've been taking lessons on a regular basis, all this should seem quite familiar. This is no more than a memory aid. If for some reason these elements are a surprise to you, it's time to consider taking Tango lessons with a competent teacher.
Next week, we'll talk about taking your first steps in the dance.
Saturdays with Fran and Pat at Dance Manhattan |
For Firehouse dancers who might enjoy a day in the Big Apple on Saturdays, Fran teaches from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. every week. He offers a beginner class in Milonga & Argentine Waltz at 11:00 a.m. as well as an intermediate class in Tango at noon. From 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Fran and Pat host a special beginner/intermediate practice for bringing your skills up to speed. The cost for the practice is $10 per person. (Bringing a partner isn't necessary.) Fran and Pat are always on hand to answer any questions you may have about your dancing, and to help you with figures you're working on. If you want to take Fran's classes, call Dance Manhattan at 212-807-0802 to register. For the practice, all you have to do is arrive with $10 and your dance shoes in hand.
See you every Saturday for a full day of Tango!
Firehouse Tango hot line - We rarely cancel |
We want to remind everyone that if the weather looks really bad, we will leave messages on our web site www.firehousetango.com and phone 201-825-1570. You can also reach us on our cell phone 201-826-6602 (Sue) and 201-913-8504 (Joe). Feel free to leave a message on any of these lines. We cancel only when absolutely necessary (only about six seven times in all these years), but please check whenever you're not sure. If there isn't any message, we're on.
During Hurricane Sandy, when we had only cell phone service, I was able to leave a message on my cell, so I guess that the best number to call is 201-826-6602. If you lost something, we probably have it. We have a few ladies' scarves and some shoes. There are also various items of clothing and jewelry in the closet. Ask Tibor at the front desk.
