Firehouse Tango - More hours to dance - Change of Schedule begins next
week
|
Starting next Thursday, June 5, Firehouse Tango will begin our new schedule. For the month of June, Fran's beginner lesson will be 7 to 7:30 and his intermediate lesson follows from 7:30 to 8:30.
Dinner and dancing will begin at 8:30. We'll also add fifteen minutes at the end of the evening, playing until 11:15. That gives us forty-five minutes more of tango, milonga, and vals. Let us know what you think. Sue and Joe Dallon

Tibor's note with his address
Many folks asked for Tibor's address so they could send cards. Here it is: Hi
Sue, I am happy to inform you that our bundle of joy came home today. Mommy & Baby are doing great! Regarding next Thursday, as of today I can't promise anything yet because Regina had a
caesarean section and she needs time to heal. I'll keep you posted how the week goes. (Mom needs one more week. Tibor will be back next Thursday.)
Our address: 316 Richard Ct Pomona, NY 10970
Thanks, Tibor
Next Thursday, June 5 - Birthday of Adrienne Burton
Adrienne, who has been coming to Firehouse for a few years, celebrates her
birthday next week. She is very excited about dancing with the Firehouse Tangueros. Please don't disappoint her.
Last Thursday -
Belated Birthday of Walter Monteblanco
Our dear friend Walter celebrated a belated birthday with us last Thursday, after his extended world travels. Walter, as he always does, started the birthday dance with Gay, then proceeded to delight the Firehouse ladies (and one brave gentleman: Joe) as they each cut in. We need to find more reasons for celebrations with this awesome dancer with the large and happy personality.
Oh, did I mention that fabulous cake? How about the shared champagne. While not as good as the tango with Walter, they were incredibly delicious.
If heaven is anything like celebrating one's birthday at Firehouse Tango, it has a lot to
recommend it. Frankly, I'd rather be at Firehouse. Thank you lovely tangueras, for a birthday memory I shall cherish. Con mucho amore,
Steve Turi
I keep saying I do not want to celebrate any more birthdays, but how many men will line up to dance with me, if not for the traditional tributes on birthdays.....oh well, you know that is not really true because our tanqueros
dance with all of the ladies...

See above for information.
Thursday, June 12 - Birthdays of Gay Fallows Monteblanco and Marie Gregoire Guys - Start with either one of these two wonderful dancers. When you are interrupted, you can cut in on the other. What a treat! Don't miss it!
Gay
As I have said many times, Gay and Walter travel so much that we have to take their birthdays when we can get them. Like Walter, Gay will celebrate late. We look forward to dancing and celebrating with this lovely dancer.
Marie
We are so lucky to be able to host yet another Gregoire celebration As always, we will celebrate Marie's birthday with many delicious goodies brought by Francis and Marie. The gentlemen will also have the opportunity for a fabulous dance with this wonderful tanguera. Don't miss
it.
Thursday, June 19 - Mr. Tango Shoe sale Jorge Nel will be at Firehouse with a large selection of Mr. Tango shoes for sale. Since I discovered his line, I have thrown out all my other tango shoes. Come with credit card or checkbook and take a look.
As and added treat, Jorge
and Milena will also perform for us.

Fran Gillespie and Joe Weintraub

We know both Fran and Joe since back in the Firehouse # 4 days, and we're absolutely delighted that they are now a couple. What joy to see them walk through the Firehouse door tonight! We hope to see more of them during their New Jersey visit. By the way, when they do come back, make sure to watch them
dance.
Thanks to Sydney St. James for encouraging me to do my first public hustle. I've only had a few lessons, but because Sydney is such an excellent leader, I didn't embarrass myself.

Hi everybody, Fran here with your Tango Tip of the Week. A few weeks ago, I offered a Tango Tip on lead/follow -- one of my favorite subjects -- to which Firehouse regular John Wynne responded: "Today, you were talking about lead/follow. What you have not mentioned is, what is the leader to do if there is a miscommunication in the lead? My theory is to go with the flow until we are back in sync. Frequently my partner does not even know there was an 'oops' moment. No finger pointing, no scowling, just continue on." First, I want to thank John very much for his response. It's nice to be reminded that my Tango Tips are not just one-way communications. Feedback like this is what makes a conversation happen. And in this case, I completely agree with his insightful observations. As I considered the email, I started to think about the point of view that I adopt in these Tango Tips -- which is that of a dance professional, expressing how things would be in an ideal world in which everybody is always doing precisely the right thing. But quite often there's a big difference between what goes on in the dance
teacher's imagination and what actually happens on the dance floor. Nobody's dancing -- my own included -- is perfect. Mistakes in the lead and/or the follow happen all the time. Sometimes, the fault may be mine; sometimes, it may be my partner's. It might be a result of
problems on the dance floor. Anything can cause a given step or figure to crash and burn. My attitude, like John's, is "no finger pointing, no scowling, just continue on." Of course, if I'm teaching a dance lesson, I'll generally comment on what happened when a so-called
mistake occurs. That's part of my job in helping my student become a better dancer. But if I'm in the middle of a social dance with somebody and things go wrong, I keep my mouth shut and as John says, "I go with the flow" and try my best to help get things back on track. Wouldn't it be great, if all of us adopted this point of view? In my opinion, this is exactly the right attitude to take during a social dance. No harm, no foul, just fun.

View Monica Paz' terrific tango Facebook posts - my pick
from this week is below |
Every day, our dear friend and teacher in Buenos Aires posts a historical tango fact of the day. These interesting and
informative tidbits always include English, Spanish and Italian information and a relevant recording. You can see all of them and listen to the recording by simply joining Monica Paz PractiMilonguero Facebook page. Below is the post for May 25th and a link to the Facebook page, where you can hear the music:
May 25, 1900: Birth of ÁNGEL D'AGOSTINO. With Ángel Vargas as singer D'Agostino had a very "milonguera" orchestra and this was his best time. The sound was sober and tasteful. The repertoire was dedicated to the Buenos Aires tango song, containing real watercolors. Now his own opinion on his style: ... respect for the melodic line and rhythmic
accentuation for easy dancing.
Here is a link to her Facebook account https://www.facebook.com/MPTango And the following one for her latest interview (She regularly posts interviews that she does with surviving old milongueros) : MP Tango Interview
MPTango Presents Jorge Garcia at PractiMilonguero Jorge García: "the things I learned
from Pugliese are humility and equality, manifesting them in the form of cooperative that formed the Orchestra." "What I learned from him is humility, equality, and he showed that by forming a cooperative with his orchestra".http://youtu.be/iBvxXlJp3FU

Our cancellation policy - We STILL rarely cancel
|
In spite of the fact that we have cancelled twice this year, we STILL rarely cancel. We want to remind everyone that if the weather looks really bad, we will
leave messages on our web site www.firehousetango.com and phone 201-825-1570. You can also reach us on our cell phone 201-826-6602 (Sue) and 201-913-8504 (Joe). Feel free to leave a message on any of these lines. We cancel only when absolutely necessary (only about seven or eight times in all these years - including, unfortunately, the first scheduled milonga of 2014), but please check whenever you're not sure. If there isn't any message, we're on.During Hurricane Sandy, when we had only cell phone service, I was able to leave a message on my cell, so I guess that the best number to call is 201-826-6602.
