We're having a ball in Buenos Aires and Mendoza
Through the magic of the Internet, you are reading this newsletter, which was written in New York/New Jersey, added to in Buenos Aires and Mendoza, and dispatched with the click of a button
to folks all around the world. Isn't modern technology amazing?
The city of Buenos Aires is my favorite home away from home, and our group is awesome. Fortunately, I can leave my baby (That would be Firehouse Tango) worry free because I have incredible friends who are more than willing and able to keep the Firehouse fires burning brightly. Please support our wonderful back-up team, especially my wonderful friends, Terri Lopez and Steve
Turi.
The logistics - The A Team
Terri Lopez (Wonder(ful) Woman) and Steve Turi (aka Superman) have generously offered to head up our milonga logistics team in addition to their normal invaluable weekly help. The tasks involved in running Firehouse are monumental, and we are incredibly fortunate to have so many fabulous friends willing to step in whenever
needed.
But What about the Music?
Not to worry. Next week, you will be treated to more music by the fabulous Richard Ariza. As you found out last week, you will not be disappointed.
DJ Richard Ariza November 5 and 12
Richard hosts the delightful Friday afternoon and Sunday evening milongas at Triangulo WWW.TANGONYC.COM. He has guest DJ'd at many New York and New Jersey milongas, and has done those honors at Firehouse often. If you haven’t been to Triangulo, you don’t know what you’re missing. You'll find information below in this newsletter about Rich's Sunday Domingo Club, which has reopened after a summer
break.
Richard is always adding to his excellent tango collection, and we are very excited about hearing his selections at Firehouse.
How about the newsletter?
This Firehouse Tango newsletter has been published nearly every week since March, 2002 and thanks to Fran and Pat, the next two weeks will be no exception.
Among his countless talents, our
remarkable instructor, Fran Chesleigh, is a professional writer. As always when I am out, he and his equally extraordinary assistant, Pat Altman, flawlessly and with a style of their own, take over the task of writing the Firehouse Tango newsletter. I, with the help of modern technology, then send out their handiwork directly from our hotel in Buenos Aires.
This awesome duo is usually found at “Fran’s Table” in the alcove closest to the DJ table.
They are always happy to answer your Tango questions or show you how to do something you might have missed, so make sure to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to learn from the best.
Inclement
weather
In case of inclement weather, I will send a message to let everyone know if we are cancelled. You may also call Terri at 201-845 270-1201 for additional information. |
Sue Dallon and our intrepid Tango Travelers are off to Buenos Aires to have a ball for two enviable weeks, while we hold the fort
here at Firehouse Tango in New Jersey. And that’s just what we all did last Thursday night. Our weekly milonga was alive and jumpin’ with great, great music by the sensational RICHARD ARIZA, who never fails to amaze with his unique choices of oh-so-danceable Tango, Vals and Milonga selections. If you’re in town next Thursday, be sure to drop by and join us for
some of the very best music and dance you could possibly ask for. All that, plus the friendliest group of fun-loving folks on the planet. We’ll all be here, and we’d be really glad to see you. Tango Tip of the
Week Hi everyone, Fran here with your Tango Tip of the Week. Let's talk about "musicality." When we dance social Tango, our goal is to respond in some appropriate way to Tango music. Some leaders seem able to keep reasonably good time, when they dance. (Others don't appear to connect to the rhythm of the music at all.) Of the leaders who are able to
respond to the beats of the music, a very talented few seem able to almost magically generate their own personal rhythmic statements and improvisations. When leaders exhibit this highly sophisticated ability, we sometimes say that they possess "musicality." In general, the conditions for developing this unique ability might be found in the
following profile: If you were born in Argentina, if you were musically gifted (this could mean lots of different things), if you grew up dancing Tango, if the people around you who influenced your dancing were accomplished, creative dancers, and if you learned your lessons well over an extended period of time (fifteen to thirty years might qualify as a nice, workable time span), you might eventually join the ranks of those elite dancers who were considered to have
"musicality." On the other hand, if some or all of these factors were not part of your personal evolution -- let's say you were born and raised in Brooklyn (ahem), and no one you grew up with ever danced at all other than the mandatory Bunny Hop at family weddings -- your road to "musicality" might be a bit long and bumpy. I think it would be fair to say that social Tango is, at one end of the spectrum, a series of mechanical, relatively learnable skills -- and at the other end a singular art form, which (in my opinion. at least) is not possible to teach. To attain "musicality" in your dance is to move closer to achieving mastery of the art
form. When I say that "musicality" can't be taught, I mean this in the same way I might suggest that mastery of any art form really cannot be taught. However, just as we can as teachers supply a student of painting with the tools necessary to create -- the brushes, the paint, the skills involved in mixing, the elements of brush
technique -- we can offer the student of Tango a series of essential skills and techniques with which he may eventually be able to develop his Tango into considerably more than simple mechanical proficiency. Over the next several Tango Tips, Pat and I will try to define and describe the skills we believe both leaders and followers need in order to elevate their
Tango beyond mere mechanics, and at least edge it a bit closer to becoming a personally fashioned art form. In the meantime, your homework is to listen carefully to every piece of Tango music you can lay your hands on, and try to find the underlying rhythmic basis beneath its melody. Starting next week, we'll elaborate on how to do this, and much more. November at Firehouse
Tango
November 5 and 12 No celebrations November 5th and 12th, just lessons, dancing, food, and socializing with some of the nicest folks around. Sue with group in Buenos Aires, Ace backup team takes over.
November 19th - Sue
back
I will be delighted to return to my favorite milonga with stories of our trip to Buenos Aires.
November 27th - Thanksgiving day - no Firehouse Milonga
Firehouse Tango will be closed on Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, November 26th. We
hope you'll enjoy the day with your family, as we all will - and, of course, we'll look forward to seeing you on the following Thursday evening, December 3rd.
Happy Thanksgiving!
If heaven is anything like celebrating one’s birthday at Firehouse Tango, it has a lot to recommend it. Frankly, I’d rather be at Firehouse. Thank you lovely tangueras, for a birthday memory I shall cherish. Con mucho
amore, Steve Turi
I keep saying I do not want to celebrate any more birthdays, but how many men will line up to dance with me, if not for the traditional tributes on
birthdays.....oh well, you know that is not really true because our tanqueros dance with all of the ladies... Terri Lopez I'm waiting for more suggestions for cortinas. Let me know if you have some favorite non tango music, and I will
try to play it.
A cortina (curtain) is a short piece (20–60 seconds) of non-dance music that is played between tandas at a milonga (tango dance event). The cortina lets the dancers know that the tanda has ended. The partners can then without insult thank each other and return to their own tables, to find a new dance partner at the next tanda. Cortinas are used at many of the milongas in Argentina and Uruguay but are increasingly common elsewhere. - Wikipedia
Let us know if you are celebrating an occasion and would like to request special music for that night’s cortinas.
We will try very hard to accommodate you. We welcome readers' contributions about Argentine Tango in general and Firehouse Tango in particular. Every day, our dear friend and teacher in Buenos Aires posts a historical tango fact of
the day. These interesting and informative tidbits always include English, Spanish and Italian information and a relevant recording. You can see all of them and listen to the recording by simply joining Monica Paz PractiMilonguero Facebook page. Below is a link to the Facebook page, where you can hear the music:
Calendario Milonguero MIGUEL CALÓ is born. Bandoneonist, composer and conductor. When he was young he looked for a personal style without finding it. Afterwards he became a pivotal representative of the decade of the 1940’s. Especially when he played with his three singers: Raúl Berón, Alberto Podestá and Raúl Iriarte. He was an uneven composer. With his pianist Oscar Maderna is the co-author of the tango we are listening to now. ♫ QUE TE IMPORTA QUE TE LLORE. Miguel Caló and Raúl Berón (1942)

Our cancelation policy - We STILL rarely cancel
|
In case of inclement weather next week, I will send out an e mail. Also, you can call Terri Lopez at 845-270-1201.Even though we had to cancel once this year, we still rarely cancel!
We want to remind everyone that if the weather looks really bad, we will leave messages on our web site www.firehousetango.com and phone 201-825-1570. You can also reach us on my cell phone 201-826-6602. Feel free to leave a message on either of these lines.
We cancel
only when absolutely necessary (only about eight or nine times in all these years - including, unfortunately, the first scheduled milonga of March, 2015), but please check whenever you're not sure. If there isn't any message, we're on.
During Hurricane Sandy, when we had only cell phone service, I was able to leave a message on my cell, so I guess that the best number to call is 201-826-6602.
The following folks helped set up, break down and clean up before and after the milonga. Without them, there would be no Firehouse Tango.
- Steve Maisch
- Steve Turi and Lynn Gross
- Tsipoyra Sartan
- Hilda and Rafael
And of course, without Terri Lopez and Steve Turi we would have to close up shop. A reminder that Firehouse Tango does not supply wine - Your fellow tangueros bring it. Therefore, if you drink it, please make sure to bring a bottle every so often. The folks below brought food and wine this week -
- Barbara - Popcorn
- Hilda Genni - 2 Flans
And these people brought wine
- Richard Abrahamsen
- Tom Rodgers
- Dan & Georgina
- Edna Negron
