Sue's New Year message - our 13th |
THANKS TO EVERYONE - WE COULDN'T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU
In 2015, Firehouse Tango continued its tradition of being the best place to dance Tango in New Jersey and the ONLY place to be on Thursday nights.
Though many of
you thank us, the truth is that it's you, our dear Firehouse friends, who generate our success. So at the beginning of the New Year, I want to thank you all for helping and for bringing wine, food, and goodies. Mostly, thank you for coming every week, for the pleasure of your company, and for all of those wonderful tangos.
I wish you all a year filled with good health, love and friendship and as the song
says, "If you have the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance."
Firehouse Tango Holiday Milonga |
Firehouse Tango celebrated the holidays Thursday, December 17th, our last milonga of 2015.
As expected, the hall was filled with happy people dancing the night away. We had door prizes, food, and dancing; and everyone came dressed for a party. Holiday cortinas and the decorated hall set the mood, and many
folks stayed to celebrate for an extra half hour. Santa showed up right on time and proved to be jolly as ever.
Awesome Holiday Dinner by Firehouse friends

If heaven is anything like celebrating one’s birthday at Firehouse Tango, it has a lot to recommend it. Frankly, I’d rather be at Firehouse. Thank you lovely tangueras, for a birthday memory I shall cherish. Con mucho amore, Steve Turi
I keep saying I do not want to celebrate any more birthdays, but how many men will line up to dance with me, if not for the traditional tributes on birthdays.....oh well, you know that is not really true because our tanqueros dance with all of the
ladies... Terri

January 2016 at Firehouse Tango |
December 31-January 1st - No Firehouse Tango - Happy New Year
January 7 -
No celebrations, just great dancing, learning, eating, and greeting old and new friends for the start of another great
year.
January 14 - Birthday of Erica Alberto
Erica is a new Firehouse friend, but she is a lovely dancer and and even lovelier person. This is her first birthday celebration at Firehouse, and I'm certain that it will be a memorable one.
Belated Birthday of Cris Grapa
Chris Grapa is a great tanguera, a great dancer, and a great
friend. She was so busy that she postponed her December birthday to January so we can all enjoy it. During the milonga, you'll find her at Fran's table or on the dance floor. Chris is still digging out from her damage from Hurricane Sandy, but she comes to Firehouse as often as she can. Carl will start the celebratory tango, and then you guys can all cut in.
January 21 - Birthdays of Estelle Stanger and Rose
Whitehill
Estelle Stanger
Estelle is one of the greatest ladies of Firehouse Tango. We are always thrilled to see her walk through the Firehouse door. We're certain that Bert looks down at the scene with joy and approval. Estelle will try to get to Firehouse on the 21st. She won't dance, but we will sing to her with great enthusiasm.
Rose
Whitehill
Rose is a great dancer and lovely lady who has been a Firehouse fan since our Firehouse # 4 days. She has also been to Buenos Aires with us seven times. We are thrilled to be able to celebrate her birthday. As for the birthday dance, I'm sure that the Firehouse Tangueros will keep cutting in as long as we would let them.
January 28 -
No
celebrations, just great dancing, learning, eating, and greeting old and new friends for the start of another great year. I'm waiting for more suggestions for cortinas. Let me know if you have some favorite non tango music, and I will
try to play it. This week's cortinas were for Christmas and New Years. Next time, I'm not sure.
A cortina (curtain) is a short piece (20–60 seconds) of non-dance music that is played between tandas at a milonga (tango dance event). The cortina lets the dancers know that the tanda has ended. The partners can then without insult thank each other and return to their own tables, to find a new dance partner at the next tanda. Cortinas are used at many of the milongas in Argentina and Uruguay but are increasingly common elsewhere. - Wikipedia
Let us know if you are celebrating an occasion and would like to request special music for that night’s cortinas. We will try very hard to accommodate you. Firehouse Tango lost two very special friends last week. I shall never forget my many wonderful tangos with these two incredible tangueros.
Dave Thomas
Many of our friends expressed sympathy at Dave's passing.
He was a great Firehouse friend, and we have many fond memories of the years he spent with us. In case you missed it, here is my notification:
Sadly, long time Firehouse Tango friend Dave Thomas passed away last night. I will send notification of a memorial service to be announced at a later date. You can send sympathy cards and wishes to his dear fiancee, Susan Konight, at 215 Vreeland Avenue, Boonton, NJ
07005.
Horacio Piccione I am devistated by the loss of another Firehouse friend, Horacio Piccioni, who passed away early yesterday morning. He will be cremated today, and there will not be any service.
If you would like to share some memories of Horacio, e mail them to me, and I will publish them in this
newsletter. Surely, our dear friend would have liked that, since he read my bulletin faithfully every week.

From Sue Dallon
I, shared many special times with
Horacio. We met for a Spanish-speaking lunch almost weekly, Amazingly, I was able to understand his every word. The words that I didn't know, he made me repeat until I remembered them forever. I learned so much from him.
Like so many of the Firehouse ladies, I loved his unique way of dancing tango. He knew all of the words to every tango and sang as we danced. He didn't know the steps to Chacarera, but we danced it anyway.
He was a great friend, and I shall miss him terribly.
Thank you all for sharing your thoughts.
Sue
From Jorge Fernandez
Hi Sue,
Trust all is well. Judy just broke the news to me. Very
sad to hear about Horacio. An excellent person.
I'd like to share some of my memories....
"I had the honor to meet Horacio about 8 years ago at a milonga in NY. From the beginning we establish great rapport and a good friendship. "how are you Jorgito!? good to see you! Come here, sit with us. Let me introduce you to some people..." would be
his welcoming phrase with a tight hug, at every milonga. Wether in the NY area or in Buenos Aires, his welcoming spirit was always uplifting. For us, dancing was the break of the intense philosophical conversations we maintained throughout the night. On our way back home from milongas in Buenos Aires, Horacio would always give me the architectural history of every prominent building along the way. He didn't die. He only departed earlier to save us a place at the
next milonga. Thank you for sharing all your wisdom and the great times! I'll miss you Horacio."
thank you,
hugs,
Jorge
From Al Ko
Sad to see another of
our FH tango friends passed away.
From Debbie Glaser
I'm so saddened by the loss of yet another of our Firehouse family. Horacio was a gentleman who it was a pleasure to dance with. I especially enjoyed him crooning to the songs! We will miss you, Horacio.
From Norma
Arias
I am so sorry to hear this. I will keep Horacio and Dave in my thoughts and prayers.
Many others expressed their sympathy, but didn't want their words published.
From Pat Flaherty
Hi
Sue,
Very sorry to read about Horatio's death. He was a wonderful dancer. I knew about his illness, but Hoped that he would survive. We cannot prevent what happens to our friends, but we can remember how they enjoyed life and be inspired.
The Argentine "caballero",
that came to Firehouse and sat at the bar, and from there connected, had conversations about all sorts of interesting topics, or asked you to dance.I enjoyed conversing with Horacio, and miss not seeing him at bar at the end of the class.
Que en paz descanse. Looking for the perfect holiday gift?
Here’s Fran and Pat’s suggestion for a
perfect holiday gift for your favorite Tango dancer. It’s a gift certificate for a private lesson with Fran! There’s nothing better to kick-start or enhance a dancer’s progress in Tango like a focused private lesson. Your gift can be for a couple, or for either a leader or follower. (For followers, Fran will serve as leader; for leaders, Pat will be on hand to do the honors while Fran teaches the lesson.) Go to our website – www.franchesleigh.com - and follow the link. Our cancelation policy - We STILL rarely cancel
|
Even though we had to cancel once this year, we still rarely cancel!
We want to remind everyone that if the weather looks really bad, we will leave messages on our web site www.firehousetango.com and phone 201-825-1570. You can also reach
us on my cell phone 201-826-6602. Feel free to leave a message on either of these lines.
We cancel only when absolutely necessary (only about eight or nine times in all these years - including, unfortunately, the first scheduled milonga of March, 2015), but please check whenever you're not sure. If there isn't any message, we're on.
During Hurricane
Sandy, when we had only cell phone service, I was able to leave a message on my cell, so I guess that the best number to call is 201-826-6602.
The following folks helped set up, break down and clean up before and after the milonga. Without them, there would be no Firehouse Tango.
- Tsipoyra Sartan
- Steve Maisch
- Bob Brillo -
- Lynn Gross
- Elena Titova
And of course, without Terri Lopez and Steve Turi we would have to close up shop. A reminder that Firehouse Tango does not supply wine - Your fellow tangueros bring it. Therefore, if you drink it, please make sure to bring a bottle every so often. The folks below brought food and wine this week - - Barbara - Cake
