End of Year Celebrations

Firehouse Tango Holiday Party/Milonga - Thursday, December 7

Firehouse Tango will celebrate the  holidays on Thursday, December 7th.

As always, expect wonderful friends, door prizes, food, and dancing; but dress for a party.  Holiday cortinas and the decorated hall will set the mood, and we'll give you an extra half hour to celebrate.  Keep your eyes open for the yearly visit from Santa on the 7th.

As always, our $15 admission charge will also include beginner (7 - 7:30) and intermediate (7:30 - 8:30) lessons taught by Fran Chesleigh and buffet dinner.

Bring a dish to the Holiday Milonga on December 7th

Here are the contributions so far for our holiday milonga.  Please let us know if you would like to bring something:

  • Sue Dallon - Brisket with potatoes, carrots, string beans, Turkey
  • Mike Porro - Salad
  • Hilda Genni - 2 Flans
  • Frank Reich - Apple pie

If you would like to make something for the Christmas/Hanukah/New Years milonga, please let me know.  It doesn't even have to be home made.

If heaven is anything like celebrating one’s birthday at Firehouse Tango, it has a lot to recommend it.  Frankly, I’d rather be at Firehouse.  Thank you lovely tangueras, for a birthday memory I shall cherish.  Con mucho amore,
                                                                Steve Turi

I keep saying I do not want to celebrate any more birthdays, but how many men will line up to dance with me, if not for the traditional tributes on birthdays.....oh  well, you know that is not really true because our tanqueros dance with all of the ladies...
                                                                Terri Lopez
Recognition of Terri Lopez - November 12, 2017
Sue:

I hope you and many others will share this well earned recognition with Terri.

Tony Mele (Terri's son)

This coming veterans day weekend -  November 12th, 2017:

The 65th Infantry Honor Task Force Committee has nominated Ms. Terri Lopez Beauchamp for the "St. Joan of Arc" medallion award in recognition of her unwavering support, guidance, and fidelity to the mission of honoring our forgotten heroes.

"For selfless devotion, unwavering faith, indomitable spirit and inspiration to others. Her countless deeds of quiet contributions to our mission, without a wit of expectation for reward, embody the virtues and the character of the lady-warrior. In keeping with this ancient tradition and code of chivalry,  Ms. Terri Lopez-Beauchamp is presented with the "St. Joan of Arc Award" reflecting great credit upon herself, her community, and the 65th Infantry Honor Task Force."

Background:

ST. JOAN OF ARC MEDAL will be a vintage mint medallion. Each one are unique in style.  It is presented as the symbolic embodiment of the lady warrior who led the entire French Army through the power of consuming inspiration and pure divine faith against unbeatable resistance.

It is a noble token stemming back from ancient Spartan women warrior tradition into medieval times from the Knights to the ladies of the realm who offered generosity through philanthropy, inspired an indomitable will to accomplish the mission, and gentle encouragement over every obstacle and challenge.

It is a symbol of undying loyalty and unwavering faith that even commands angelic forces against all enemies in times of righteous battle.

Cortinas on Demand

I'm waiting for more suggestions for cortinas.  Let me know if you have some favorite non tango music, and I will try to play it. Last week, I played Django Reinhardt Cortinas.

A cortina (curtain) is a short piece (20–60 seconds) of non-dance music that is played between tandas at a milonga (tango dance event). The cortina lets the dancers know that the tanda has ended. The partners can then without insult thank each other and return to their own tables, to find a new dance partner at the next tanda. Cortinas are used at many of the milongas in Argentina and Uruguay but are increasingly common elsewhere- Wikipedia

Let us know if you are celebrating an occasion and would like to request special music for that night’s cortinas.  We will try very hard to accommodate you.

Tango Tip of the week
Hi everyone, Fran here with your Tango Tip of the Week. I’m sure we all pretty much agree that learning to dance Tango is a very difficult challenge. Most of the time, the so-called learning curve probably seems more like a flat line, or even a downward slope. You find yourself wondering whether you’ll ever be able to actually dance — rather than constantly beating your head against a wall.

Does all this sound familiar? Okay, take a deep breath. Free your mind. Get ready to face the music. It’s time to take a hard look at the truth. I want to ask you a serious question just between us: Do you practice?

Do you practice?

I’d be willing to bet that, if you’re being honest with yourself, the ultimate answer is no. It’s not that you don’t want to practice, of course; it’s just that you have so much else to do; it’s just that you can’t find a partner to work with; it’s just that there’s no available space; it’s just that … well, you get the idea, right?

And besides, isn’t social dance — even if it’s Tango — supposed to be easy?

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, let me be the first to tell you that, no, dancing social Tango is very definitely not supposed to be easy, and yes, in order to get anywhere at all you really, really have to practice. That’s in addition to a regular schedule of ongoing, progressive lessons with a knowledgeable teacher plus learning how to think about Tango in the right way plus lots of quality time on the dance floor with partners who understand what Tango is about — and are ready, willing, and able to work as hard as you plan to do in order to make something happen. And even if you do all that, your progress is going to occur in fits and starts. You won’t have any sudden “aha moment” that puts it all together in a flash of inspiration. You’re going to bite the bullet and do the work in order to eventually reap the reward.

The key word here is eventually.

For me, one of the major benefits of being a Tango teacher is that I get to dance Tango all the time. I get to think about Tango all the time. I get to constantly revise and refine my own Tango technique all the time. You can make a commitment to doing all that, too — not by suddenly dropping everything else in your life and becoming a Tango junkie like the old-time milongueros of Buenos Aires (although that doesn’t sound like a bad idea, given what else is going on in the world today). Just make up your mind once and for all to get yourself seriously into the game. And the one decision that will put that commitment in motion starting right now involves a positive answer to the question I posed at the beginning of this Tango Tip: Do you practice?

From now on your answer will be: Yes, I do!

Our cancelation policy - We STILL rarely cancel

Even though we had to cancel once last year because of a blizzard, we still rarely cancel!

We want to remind everyone that if the weather looks really bad, we will leave messages on our web site www.firehousetango.com and my cell phone 201-826-6602. Feel free to leave a message.

We cancel only when absolutely necessary (only about eight or nine times in all these years - including, unfortunately, the Thursday that I was in Florida, but please check whenever you're not sure. If there isn't any message, we're on.

During Hurricane Sandy, when we had only cell phone service, I was able to leave a message on my cell, so I guess that the best number to call is 201-826-6602.

A final thank you

The following folks helped set up, break down and clean up before and after the milonga. Without them, there would be no Firehouse Tango.

  • Steve Turi
  • Lynn Gross
  • Tsipoyra Sartan
  • Jesse Barton
  • Bob Brillo
  • Steve Maisch

And of course, without Terri Lopez and Steve Turi  we would have to close up shop.

A reminder that Firehouse Tango does not supply wine - Your fellow tangueros bring it. Therefore, if you drink it, please make sure to bring a bottle every so often.
