Celebrations
Next week, December 14, we celebrate the birthday of Elena Titova. Elena has been a faithful Firehouse friend for years and fills in as ticket taker when Tibor is out.  She's a great dancer, and all of you tangueros will love doing the celebratory dance with her.

If heaven is anything like celebrating one’s birthday at Firehouse Tango, it has a lot to recommend it.  Frankly, I’d rather be at Firehouse.  Thank you lovely tangueras, for a birthday memory I shall cherish.  Con mucho amore,
                                                                Steve Turi

I keep saying I do not want to celebrate any more birthdays, but how many men will line up to dance with me, if not for the traditional tributes on birthdays.....oh  well, you know that is not really true because our tanqueros dance with all of the ladies...

Firehouse Tango Holiday Milonga a great success

Firehouse Tango Holiday Milonga
Firehouse Tango celebrated the  holidays Thursday, December 7th.

As expected, the hall was filled with happy people dancing the night away.  We had door prizes, food, and dancing; and everyone came dressed for a party.  Holiday cortinas and the decorated hall set the mood, and many folks stayed to celebrate for an extra half hour.   Santa showed up right on time and proved to be jolly as ever.

Cortinas on Demand

I'm waiting for more suggestions for cortinas.  Let me know if you have some favorite non tango music, and I will try to play it. Last week, I played holiday cortinas. Next week, The Eagles.

A cortina (curtain) is a short piece (20–60 seconds) of non-dance music that is played between tandas at a milonga (tango dance event). The cortina lets the dancers know that the tanda has ended. The partners can then without insult thank each other and return to their own tables, to find a new dance partner at the next tanda. Cortinas are used at many of the milongas in Argentina and Uruguay but are increasingly common elsewhere- Wikipedia

Let us know if you are celebrating an occasion and would like to request special music for that night’s cortinas.  We will try very hard to accommodate you.

Dear Sue,

Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah to all the nice people at Firehouse Tango.  I wish I could be there to celebrate with you.
Love,
Ferd
Free Tango Shoes Size 8.5 Courtesy of Sue
There are two pairs (size 8.5) tango shoes available for anyone to take and enjoy.  They are on the front table.  They're barely worn and very pretty (I think.)  I bought them in Buenos Aires, but I never wear them.
Tango Tip of the week

Hi everyone, Fran here with your Tango Tip of the Week. As a teacher, I hear a lot of students complain again and again about how difficult Tango is to learn. Maybe that’s how you feel. (I used to feel the same way.) And today, I’m going to tell you why. That’s right; I’m going to let you in on the secret. You have the learning process backward.

Yes, backward.

This is what I mean. As we discussed last week, many teachers are under pressure by students — particularly male students — to focus more or less exclusively on “moves.” It is unfortunate, but true, that stage-oriented steps are what most men want. I think this is because most male students believe that:

·      Such material will make them look good on the dance floor

·      A repertoire of complex figures will impress their partners

·      Accumulating fancy figures will provide them with a shortcut to mastering the dance

None of this is true.

Here are the facts:

·      Complex material, executed badly by inexperienced students, is nothing short of ludicrous to anyone with a discerning eye

·      The vast majority of followers are not at all impressed — and are, in fact, really turned off — by being uncomfortably wrestled through figures, which such students cannot lead with any degree of expertise

·      As you will eventually find out for yourself — if you don’t know it already — there is simply no shortcut to learning Tango

Yes, I know, major bummer — but facts, much as we may not want to hear them, are facts.

The late Carlos Gavito used to tell his students: “Tango is a way to walk.” He would follow this up by saying, “Forget about figures; learn how to move through space. Only then should you begin to consider building a vocabulary of steps.” Next week, I’m going to share a few things that Pat and I think are important in “learning how to walk.”

Stay tuned.

Fran and Pat now offer a new class in American Social Dance

In a recent interview appearing on YouTube, the renowned milonguero Flaco Dani said he strongly believed that passing down the music and dance tradition of one’s country from one generation to the next was a necessary mandate for those who had the power to do so. Pat and I agree, and to this end we’ve begun what we call the American Social Dance Project, an all-new initiative designed to preserve and nurture real American social dancing – the way it was meant to be.

We’ve kicked off our project with what we call “Class One” – a weekly exploration of three important American Social Dances: Foxtrot, Triple Swing, and Salsa. (Yes, we know Salsa is from the Caribbean – but here in America, we’ve adopted this and many other social dance forms as our own since the 1920s.)

We hope you like the idea of keeping American social dance alive, not competitive or performance dancing, but real social dance the way it was traditionally done. To that end, we invite you to join us every Monday evening at 8:00 p.m. for a fun-filled social dance fix. We guarantee that you’ll have a ball!

Here are the details:

Our cancelation policy - We STILL rarely cancel

Even though we had to cancel once last year because of a blizzard, we still rarely cancel!

We want to remind everyone that if the weather looks really bad, we will leave messages on our web site www.firehousetango.com and my cell phone 201-826-6602. Feel free to leave a message.

We cancel only when absolutely necessary (only about eight or nine times in all these years - including, unfortunately, the Thursday that I was in Florida, but please check whenever you're not sure. If there isn't any message, we're on.

During Hurricane Sandy, when we had only cell phone service, I was able to leave a message on my cell, so I guess that the best number to call is 201-826-6602.
