Next Thursday April 27th -  Birthday of Francis Gregoire

Francis and Marie Gregoire have been coming to Firehouse for many years and have been to Buenos Aires with us three times, and we are honored to be able to celebrate Francis' birthday on April 27th.  Francis will start the birthday tango with Marie and then the lucky ladies can begin cutting in (me first). Francis is a terrific dancer, and it is sure to be delightful.   Oh, and   the mountain of huge and luscious shrimp and mouth-watering chocolate cake that Francis and Marie always bring will surely be delicious, as always.

Last Thursday, April 20th - Birthday of Eva Roth

Our dear milonguera from Buenos Aires, who took Firehouse by storm a few years ago and cooks something different for us almost every Thursday when she is here, celebrated her birthday with us when she returned from Bs. As. on Thursday, April 20th.   Eva loves the milonga, and she glowed while dancing her favorite dance and two tangos. As per her request, I also played a her favorites for the Latin set: cumbia, pasa doble, and merengue.  Ceferino (our milonguero fresh from Buenos Aires) started the tango and Eva's many admirers followed.
Eva brought a huge and delicious chocolate birthday cake.

If heaven is anything like celebrating one’s birthday at Firehouse Tango, it has a lot to recommend it.  Frankly, I’d rather be at Firehouse.  Thank you lovely tangueras, for a birthday memory I shall cherish.  Con mucho amore,
                                                                Steve Turi

I keep saying I do not want to celebrate any more birthdays, but how many men will line up to dance with me, if not for the traditional tributes on birthdays.....oh  well, you know that is not really true because our tanqueros dance with all of the ladies...
                                                                Terri Lopez

Welcome back Terri
Our indispensible second in command, Terri Lopez, was out last week, and boy, did we miss her!  Thank goodness, her foot is healing, and she was able to join us this Thursday, even though she couldn't dance.  We can all breathe easy once more.
Cortinas on Demand

I'm waiting for more suggestions for cortinas.  Let me know if you have some favorite non tango music, and I will try to play it. This week's awesome cortinas were suggested (and given to me) by Mike Porro.  I particularly loved the Jimmy Durante song.

A cortina (curtain) is a short piece (20–60 seconds) of non-dance music that is played between tandas at a milonga (tango dance event). The cortina lets the dancers know that the tanda has ended. The partners can then without insult thank each other and return to their own tables, to find a new dance partner at the next tanda. Cortinas are used at many of the milongas in Argentina and Uruguay but are increasingly common elsewhere- Wikipedia

Let us know if you are celebrating an occasion and would like to request special music for that night’s cortinas.  We will try very hard to accommodate you.

Tango Tip of the week

Hi everybody, Fran here with your Tango Tip of the Week. For this week's Tip I'm going to switch gears a bit, and shamelessly plug our next Workshop -- which (in case you haven't heard) will take place this coming Sunday, 12:30 -- 3:30, Pearl Studios, 500 Eighth Ave, (between 35th and 36th Streets).

As you know, I spend a lot of time, discussing with you in detail what I think good Tango dancing is all about. But sometimes I think you just have to kick out the jams, and have some fun! That's what this Workshop is for. Pat and I will, of course, offer you a wide variety of really useful moves, adornments, and other goodies -- as we always do at these events. (You can get additional information further down in today's Newsletter.)

The major reason we want you to be sure to join us, however, is the fun factor. People always tell us what a seriously great time they have, when they spend a Sunday afternoon with us. Once you take the plunge, and get yourself to the Big Apple by hook or crook, we think you'll definitely agree.

Sound like a plan? We look forward to the pleasure of your company.

Our cancelation policy - We STILL rarely cancel

Even though we had to cancel once this year because of a blizzard, we still rarely cancel!

We want to remind everyone that if the weather looks really bad, we will leave messages on our web site www.firehousetango.com and my cell phone 201-826-6602. Feel free to leave a message.

We cancel only when absolutely necessary (only about eight or nine times in all these years - including, unfortunately, the Thursday that I was in Florida, but please check whenever you're not sure. If there isn't any message, we're on.

During Hurricane Sandy, when we had only cell phone service, I was able to leave a message on my cell, so I guess that the best number to call is 201-826-6602.

A final thank you
