Thursday, June 15 - Firehouse Tango 14th Anniversary Celebration - Monica Paz at Firehouse
Firehouse Tango started
in 2003 and has been going strong ever since. Amazingly, we are still here, celebrating our fourteenth anniversary.
We are planning to add lots of extra-special delights on Thursday, June 15th. I will make brisket with potatoes, carrots, and string beans and a turkey. Monica and Johnny will delight us with a performance.
As always, admission of $15 includes dinner, lesson, dancing and socializing with some of the

About Monica
Monica Paz was born and raised in Buenos Aires, and tango has been her full time profession for almost 20 years. She specializes in Tango Milonguero style (with its strong chest-to-chest connection) which she loves to dance with the best old milongueros in the best
milongas of Buenos Aires.
Five years ago, Monica realized her dream of opening her own studio in Buenos Aires (at 30 Riobamba near the Congresso.) Monica and Osvaldo Natucci (one of the best milongueros in Buenos Aires) also teach private lessons. If you are in Buenos Aires, I highly recommend checking out these lessons.

I am very happy to announce my upcoming visit to NYC. This year my visit will be shorter, however I have A LOT to share with my students. After more than twenty years of dancing with the Milongueros in Buenos Aires and learning from them, I regard them as the connection between Tango in the Golden Age and nowadays. For the Milongueros and for me, Tango is more than a fashionable dance. “I don't want to teach you just WHAT to do, but HOW to
do it: this is my CHALLENGE”. If you feel ready for that, you can find me at the Astoria Tango Club or in my Master Classes and Private Lessons.

Last Thursday, June 1st - Birthday of Gay Fallows
Gay returned to Firehouse in between extensive world travels with her husband and our dear friend, Walter
Monteblanco. We are thrilled to have her whenever we can. Gay has been a Firehouse friend for years, and we are always happy to celebrate with her. Walter started the birthday dance, and then all of the Firehouse milongueros joined in.
Walter, as usual, brought a fabulously delicious cake. Since we forgot to open the champagne that Walter brought a few weeks ago at his birthday celebration, we remembered the two bottles
this time. They disappeared very quickly.
If heaven is anything like
celebrating one’s birthday at Firehouse Tango, it has a lot to recommend it. Frankly, I’d rather be at Firehouse. Thank you lovely tangueras, for a birthday memory I shall cherish. Con mucho amore, Steve

Twice this
month, I will play hooky. June 8th I'm passing up Firehouse for my granddaughter Amanda's high school graduation, and on the 22nd, I'll be in the Hamptons. Fortunately, I can leave my baby (That would be Firehouse Tango) worry free because I have incredible friends who are more than willing and able to keep the Firehouse fires burning brightly. Please support our wonderful back-up team.
The logistics - The A Team
Terri Lopez (Wonder(ful) Woman) and Steve Turi (aka Superman) have generously offered to head up our milonga logistics team in addition to their normal invaluable weekly help. The tasks involved in running Firehouse are monumental, and we are incredibly fortunate to have so many fabulous friends willing to step in whenever
needed.
But What about the Music? Johnny Tablada DJ's
Not to worry. While we are away, your tangos, milongas and valses will be spun by fabulous guest DJ, Johnny Tablada. Many of our tangueras have had the pleasure of dancing with Johnny, who comes to Firehouse every Thursday. Now, you can enjoy listening to his incredible music, as
well. I promise you will not be disappointed. Johnny has an amazing and extensive knowledge of Argentine Tango.
How about the newsletter?
This Firehouse Tango newsletter has been published nearly every week since March, 2002 and thanks to Fran and Pat, the next two weeks will be no
exception.
Among his countless talents, our remarkable instructor, Fran Chesleigh, is a professional writer. As always when I am out, he and his equally extraordinary assistant, Pat Altman, flawlessly and with a style of their own, take over the task of writing the Firehouse Tango newsletter. I will send his handiwork out when I return.
This awesome duo is
usually found at “Fran’s Table” in the alcove closest to the DJ table. They are always happy to answer your Tango questions or show you how to do something you might have missed, so make sure to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to learn from the best. I'm waiting for more suggestions for cortinas. Let me know if you have some favorite non tango music, and I will
try to play it. This week's cortinas were by Abba (requested by Johnny and Diane).
A cortina (curtain) is a short piece (20–60 seconds) of non-dance music that is played between tandas at a milonga (tango dance event). The cortina lets the dancers know that the tanda has ended. The partners can then without insult thank each other and return to their own tables, to find a new dance partner at the next tanda. Cortinas are used at many of the milongas in Argentina and Uruguay but are increasingly common elsewhere. - Wikipedia

"Don't they serve those really huge drinks here?"
"What's your
problem?"
"The usual."
"Students?"
"What else? They fight tooth and nail to get you to give them exactly what they want, when they want it ..."
"I know; and they fight even harder to keep you from giving them what they really need."
"I'm going to have a double."
"Do you think they serve triples?"

The majority of dance teachers I know really do want their students to learn how to dance. The problem is that today we live in what is euphemistically called "a buyer's market." Everything is upside down. In this "Alice in Wonderland" world, it's no longer the teacher who determines the lesson plan -- it's the student.
"Give us what we want, or we'll pick up, and go somewhere else."
I distinctly remember, when the first wave of teachers from Argentina came to New York as a result of the popularity of "Tango Argentino." Their almost instant assessment of students here was that what we really, really needed first and foremost was to learn how to walk. And that's exactly what they tried to focus on
in teaching us. They’d say: "It took us at least three years before we could walk like Tango dancers. Let's get started right now."
We, in the other hand, wanted instant access to all those impressive figures the stars were showing us during the show. And we wanted them right now, immediately. We could learn to "walk" later ... well, maybe.
Eventually, even the most determined Argentine teachers' practical need to earn a living won out, and those that kept coming back to this country essentially decided to cave in and give us what we wanted -- even if it meant that we'd be without the foundations necessary to execute those fancy stage figures with any reasonable degree of proficiency.
In fact, that's pretty much where
things are today. Recently, my attention was drawn to a promotional flier for an upcoming series of workshops being held by a famous Argentine performance couple for "everyone from beginners to advanced dancers." From the description on the flier, one could only conclude that even a mediocre student should expect to become an expert within two or three weeks. All it would cost would be something in the neighborhood of $300 to $400. What a bargain!
On the day of the first workshop, I happened to be at the venue, a dance studio where I hold a regular event of my own. In my opinion, the students arriving for the workshop were for the most part the usual delusional overachievers who had long ago drunk the "Kool Aid." But among this crowd I suddenly noticed several of my own students.
Aghhhh!
"Oh no," I wanted to shake these people by the shoulders, and say. "What are you doing here? Don't you realize that this is going to be a huge waste of time and money? Not to mention the fact that it will actually take your social Tango backwards rather than forwards?"
Fortunately, I elected to just keep my mouth shut, and simply offer them my best wishes as they headed for (what I conceive of as) the fast track to a fool's paradise. Who am I to get in the way of my students' pipe dreams and fantasies?
"If they want to learn how to dance," I thought, "I'll be there to show them the way. If they want
to build castles in the air, who am I to tell them not to."
In the meantime, however, since I don't drink, I need an outlet for my frustration. And you're it. You really do want to learn how to dance social Tango, don't you? Yes, you may flirt with the dark side from time to time, but you will come back to reality, won't you?
Remember, I'm counting on you to do the right thing.
