Thursday, September 27, Birthday of Terri Lopez
|
Terri, who has
become so indispensable that I say in all seriousness that Firehouse Tango could not exist without her, celebrates her birthday on Thursday, September 27th.
We will invite the Firehouse Tangueros to show our most loyal Firehouse friend EVER just how much we all appreciate her . Our dear friend Rudy will start the birthday tango. Then, a stream of Firehouse Tangueros will cut in, dancing to Di Sarli tango and a milonga. The cortinas, of course, will be Terri's favorite, Tony Bennett.
I (Sue) will bring the delicious cake with Terri's beautiful picture.
Terri Lopez has been a part of the Firehouse family since our first days at Paramus Firehouse # 4, and we look forward to many more birthday celebrations with
her.
I want to point out that Terri Lopez is more than a helper who I call Wonder Woman and who takes my place when I am out. Terri is our CEO and has as much, if not more, responsibility and authority than I do.
Let me make it clear: Firehouse Tango would not exist without her. If heaven is anything like celebrating one’s birthday at Firehouse Tango, it has a lot to recommend it. Frankly, I’d rather be at Firehouse. Thank you lovely tangueras, for a birthday memory I shall cherish. Con mucho amore, Steve Turi I keep saying I do not want to celebrate any more birthdays, but how many men will line up to dance with me, if not for the traditional tributes on birthdays.....oh well, you know that is not really true because
our tanqueros dance with all of the ladies... Terri Lopez
Congratulations to Diane Langmuir
|
Diane Langmuir and Jevgeni Davidov snapped up award after award in the pro-am division of the International Tango Summit in Los Angeles last week. I lost count of the many ribbons and trophies for their performances in a multitude of tango, milonga, and vals heats in bronze, silver, and gold levels. They also placed second in
the all-around gold competition. Even more impressive, Diane was selected by the judges as the best student in the event. Congratulation, dear friend. I'm so proud of you.
Sue back - Thanks to All for running Firehouse in my absence |
After a wonderful time in sunny California, I'm back to the world's friendliest (and I think the best) milonga. As always, I loved my vacation, but I'm very happy to return to my dear friends at home (Though I will be out again in October -- c'est la vie).
Thanks, thanks,
and more thanks to the Firehouse Tangueros Huge helpings of gratitude go to all of you who brought food and drinks, set up, and cleaned up. I am very aware that my trip would be impossible without an enormous amount of help from the folks back home. The logistics - The Superhero Team Special thanks to Terri Lopez, Steve Turi, and Fran Chesleigh for making the whole shebang such
a great success. Terri, with Steve's help (and a shout-out to Tsipoyra), planned; ran operations; and coordinated setup and cleanup (and that's not all.) Fran and Pat executed the lessons to perfection. These folks fielded the problems and glitches that seem to arise every week. The tasks involved in running Firehouse are monumental, and we are incredibly fortunate to have so many fabulous friends willing to step in whenever needed.
The newsletter This Firehouse Tango newsletter has been published nearly every week since March, 2002 and thanks to Fran and Pat, the past two weeks were no exception.
Among his countless talents, our remarkable instructor, Fran Chesleigh, is a professional writer. As always when I am out, he and his equally extraordinary assistant, Pat Altman, flawlessly and with a style of their own, take over the task of writing the
Firehouse Tango newsletter. I easily sent it out when I returned. The awesome duo (Fran and Pat) is usually found at "Fran's Table" in the alcove closest to the DJ table. They are always happy to answer your Tango questions or show you how to do something you might have missed, so make sure to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to learn from the best. Superman Steve Turi was Clean-up Editor.
The
music -Rich Ariza While I was away, your tangos, milongas and valses were spun by fabulous guest DJ, Rich Ariza. He has been our guest DJ at Firehouse and is very much in demand all over the NY metropolipan area.
Rich has guest-DJ'd at many New York and New Jersey milongas, and we've had the pleasure of his company - not to mention DJ expertise - quite often at the Firehouse.

Last week, I played Jewish themed cortinas in honor of Rosh Hashanah. I'll have Cortinas with Carol King and James Taylor next week.
A cortina (curtain) is a short piece (20–60 seconds) of non-dance music that is played between tandas at a milonga (tango dance event). The cortina lets the dancers know that the tanda has ended. The partners can then without insult thank each other and return to their own tables, to
find a new dance partner at the next tanda. Cortinas are used at many of the milongas in Argentina and Uruguay but are increasingly common elsewhere. - Wikipedia
Let us know if you are celebrating an occasion and would like to request special music for that night’s cortinas. We will try very hard to accommodate you. We welcome readers' contributions about Argentine Tango in general and Firehouse Tango in particular. Send your thoughts to firehousetango@gmail.com We welcome readers' contributions about Argentine
Tango in general and Firehouse Tango in particular. Send your thoughts to firehousetango@gmail.com Hi everyone, Fran here with your Tango Tip of the Week. As you probably know by now, learning Tango isn’t easy. Any person who believes he or she can master this complex discipline by wishful thinking, by watching other people on the dance floor, or by taking a few classes here and there is simply never — I mean NEVER — going to get anywhere with
Tango.
What does it take, then, to really learn how to dance Tango— beyond accumulating a lexicon of steps and techniques over time? Let’s talk about the specific qualities I believe you need to possess in order to be a successful Tango student. Here’s a list:
1.
Commitment 2. Patience 3. Perseverance 4. Humility 5. A good teacher 6. Money 7. Natural
ability 8. A good sense of humor
Today, I’m going to talk about the first of these qualities; i.e., commitment.
One of the serious fallacies about social dancing of any kind — and perhaps Tango in particular — is that it’s simple to learn.
Students watch other people dance, and think, “Sure, I could do that. It looks pretty easy.” At the same time, dance schools are all too eager to perpetrate the completely erroneous notion that learning to social dance is a piece of cake. I remember years ago Katharine Murray (Arthur Murray’s wife) exclaiming week after week on the nationally broadcast TV show: “Learning to dance is easy. Anyone can do it.”
Even as a relatively inexperienced dance student, I used to yell back at the TV: “You’re lying, Katharine! That’s not true.” Of course, (sigh) neither she nor Arthur ever listened to me.
I believe that social dancing is actually one of the most difficult things you can possibly undertake to learn. I’m not talking about the kind of choreographed, cookie-cutter nonsense that’s
routinely taught in dance schools, where students memorize their individual parts, and then reproduce these preset figures like robots. Katharine was right. That stuff really is easy to learn, and, yes, anyone can do it.
On the other hand, real social dancing involves two people executing an improvised series of movements together, creating the illusion that they’re, in fact, ONE PERSON — and they
do all this on a dance floor that is crowded with other people, who are all trying to do that same thing.
Wow!
To learn how to do this, you need to make a very serious commitment to the task. You need to recognize that because dancing social Tango is a major, major, major skill, a one-hour class once a
week after you’ve had a few drinks, or while you’re waiting for dinner to be served just isn’t going to get the job done. You need to say to yourself, “I’m really going to learn how to do this,” which means you’re going to do whatever it takes to get better and better at this unique skill set over whatever period of time you need.
COMMITMENT.
Learning social dance is one of the most satisfying achievements of my life. It took me many years of often seriously frustrating trial and (lots of) error to accomplish. Now, being able to get up on a dance floor, and move with another person (like my wonderfully talented wife, Pat) is nothing short of thrilling.
You have it in you to
achieve the same thing. You can become a first-rate social dancer. And the first thing you need to do to bring it about is to make a commitment to the process.
Make that commitment now. I guarantee that you won’t be sorry.

Our cancelation policy - We STILL rarely cancel
|
Even though we had to cancel twice this year because of blizzards, we still rarely cancel! We want to remind everyone that if the weather looks really bad, we will leave messages on our web site www.firehousetango.com and my cell phone 201-826-6602.
Feel free to leave a message.
We cancel only when absolutely necessary (still only about ten times in all these years, but please check whenever you're not sure. If there isn't any message, we're on.
During Hurricane Sandy, when we had only cell phone service, I was able to leave a message on my cell, so I guess that the best number to
call is 201-826-6602.
This week, we welcomed back our neighbor who helps clean up, Anjelito. Thanks to all of you who put in some extra time to help his replacement family during his absense.
I want to particularly acknowledge the following folks:
Jesse Barton Steve Maisch Sandor and Brigitte Szarka Barbara and of course: Tsipoyra Sartan Steve Turi and Lynn Gross and lots of other folks.
Thanks so much. All we had to do was ask, and you all came through - We love you all.
Thanks to everyone who
helped and who brought food and goodies. This is a reminder that Firehouse Tango does not supply wine - Your fellow tangueros bring it. Therefore, if you drink it, please make sure to bring a bottle every so often.
Special Thanks to Mike Porro for helping me wash the dishes.
